.) Always ask the technician if your data will be backed up BEFORE any work is done on your PC. No matter how simple your problem may be there is always a risk that your data will be lost. If there is any hesitation end the call. Think about all of those lost documents, photos, emails, etc!
.) Ask for References. If the provider cannot give you at least 3-5 references be leery of doing business with them.
.) Get an estimate upfront and when possible find out what the maximum charge could be. What you dont want to have happen is to get a bill that exceeds the value of your PC! (There are exceptions to this such as data recovery.)
.) Be aware of flat fee services. For example, if you see an ad that states they will fix ANY problem for $50 be careful. If your PC has a major problem it can take many hours to restore it back to its original state. If this is the case you have to ask yourself if the person you are dealing with really understands the nature of computer support.
.) Be aware of unusually low rates such as $15. Almost without exception, anyone who charges a fee this low lacks experience and you need to ask yourself if you want a person of this caliber working on your computer.
.) If you see an unusually low price, such as $25-$50 to clean a virus look elsewhere. The process of eliminating a virus or spyware program is partially automated by using an anti-virus or spyware program. However, to totally clean the infection there are many more steps that must be done manually. This takes knowledge and skill and a service provider that has these skills will not charge such low prices.
.) Watch out for 'techie' talk! If the person you are speaking with cannot explain things in simple terms that a non technical person can understand, look elsewhere. You have the right to know exactly what your problem is and how it will be fixed. If someone can't talk to you in plain english you'll never know what he or she is going to do.
